Quality landscape design is multi-dimensional. Good design solves problems related to function, usability, predictability, and creativity. And good design satisfies stated project objectives developed by the client and the designer during the planning phase.
The objectives in this case were to develop a one level space with a low profile that provided dining space, social space and a fire pit location while still leaving enough lawn for the family to enjoy. As you can see from the following photos, an expansive patio running the length of the house was the solution, though the areas are distinctly defined.
All the objectives were met, the space flows evenly with a nice rhythm, and the homeowners still have lawn for their young family.
